Chapter 5
The clouds overhead were still grey as Ethan walked into the library on Superior. In fact, they were now lined in black. Rain was coming. Ethan walked into the library, headed to the computer section and sat down at one. Within seconds, he was logged onto the internet and his Facebook page. Posted at the very top of his page was a YouTube video, the video of the beating he’d just received at school. It had been uploaded already and shared with several people. Ethan knew those several would turn into dozens. It would spread like wildfire until everyone around the school had seen it.
Ethan leaned back into the chair miserably. Within seconds, comments began to flood his page underneath the video. None of them were positive or sympathetic towards his beating. Every comment poked fun at him. Ethan felt humiliated but just like everything else that had happened to him today, he was used to it.
Ethan’s Facebook page was always riddled with negative posts and comments from his classmates. None of them knew him or even took the time to make an attempt at getting to know him. But their comments and posts were always personal. They said he smelled. They called him names. They called him stupid. They made fun of his clothes. They called him gay. They made up lies and rumors. They were absolutely heartless and brutal in their words. The most recent were absolutely no different.
The comments on the beating were now flooding in. Everyone was laughing at Ethan. Unable to take another second, Ethan logged off the computer and headed out of the library. Traffic up and down Superior Ave whizzed by as usual as he made his way towards 105th and crossed. A moment later, he walked into a store. Several people were inside and at The Lottery end of the counter trying to get their numbers in before twelve o’clock. The owner, an old black man, was conversing with them as he accepted their money and processed their numbers. Usually, there was someone working with him. Today though, Ethan didn’t see anyone else.
Perfect!
The store, the oldest one on the strip and the only one that was still black owned, was divided into only two isles. Can goods, Ramen Noodles, bread and cleaning agents laced the shelves of one isle while potato chips and a long stretching cooler of alcohol lined the other. Ethan glanced back towards the owner and headed directly to the cooler when he noticed the owner wasn’t paying attention to him. Slyly he opened the cooler door, grabbed a fifth of MD 20/20 grape and slid it into the pocket of his hoodie. Glancing at the owner again, he closed the door, headed back towards the front of the store and walked out.
Ethan never looked back even once as he made his way down Superior and crossed 105th again. Moments later, he reached East Blvd, headed around its winding road and walked into Cultural Gardens. Cultural Gardens was a section of a park that stretched from Lake Erie to Euclid crossing dozens of streets in-between.
